Sayon's Bell

サヨンの鐘

Sayon no Kane

Sayon's Bell — principal still
Fig. ISayon's Bell · Shōchiku · 1943
Notes

Shimizu films the mountain village of Atayal Taiwan as he films children — at eye level, without instruction. Yoshiko Yamaguchi, billed as Ri Kōran, sings the ballad that the propaganda demanded; the camera answers with rivers, footpaths, and small hands cupped against the wind. The kokusaku frame remains visible, but Shimizu's attention drifts toward the things state cinema cannot quite legislate: the patience of a slope, the weight of carried luggage, a face turned slightly away.
