Notes
Ozu's pillow shots — empty corridors, a kettle on the stove, telegraph wires across an unmoving cloud — render absence with the same patience as presence. The camera, fixed at tatami height, refuses to flinch. What survives, in the end, is a daughter-in-law's quiet smile and the sea at Onomichi.
